The story of the 24-hour filmmaking marathon
The 24-hour filmmaking marathon was established in 2004 called the Digi 24 FilmMarathon. As the first such program at the world it took place in Szekszárd, Hungary. It was based on the idea of the founder Gábor Kindl who set up the program with the help of Prof. Karl Bardosh of New York University, who then became the artistic director of the competition. Since then we have regularly organized similar filmmaking competitions, including two other global events with great success. Since the beginning experienced filmmakers have joined our team and supported our ideas.
In cooperation with the Hungarian Red Cross and its chairman Georg von Habsburg we created another program called Shoot4Life in 2008. As an international, invitation-only event it was successfully held across five continents to promote voluntary blood donation.
The heads of the jury were Oscar-winning directors Jiří Menzel and István Szabó. Other members of the jury were Prof. Sandeep Marwah, the founder and president of the Asian Academy of Film & Television, as well as the artistic director of the competition, Prof. Karl Bardosh of New York University.
Our program was backed by the four time Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, as well, who expressed his endorsement in a letter sent to us.
In the following years (2009-2010) the event took place in Pécs, Hungary, and in the then-current European Capitals of Culture (Essen, Istambul, Pécs).
In these years the heads of the jury were Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel, director Károly Makk and Professor Karl Bardosh.
In 2013 the theme of the Shoot4Earth international filmmarathon was environmental protection. The members of the jury were Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel, Prof. Sandeep Marwah, the founder and president of the Asian Academy of Film & Television, Prof. Karl Bardosh of New York University and Jenő Hódi, founder of Budapest Film Academy. The jury received films from all different continents.
Later, we kept on running filmmaking competitions about the need for environmental protection. In 2017 one of the members of the jury was Kristóf Deák who won an Oscar for his short film Sing (originally titled Mindenki in Hungarian).
